How to Clean Vibrators & Other Intimate Products
Clean, Dry and Store With Less Guesswork
A calm, material-aware care guide for cleaning, drying, charging and storing your products without damaging them.
The safest cleaning routine begins with the instructions for your exact product. Materials, motors, seams, charging ports and water-resistance ratings all change what a toy can handle. If the packaging or manual gives directions, follow those first. When you cannot confirm the material or waterproof rating, choose the gentlest option: wipe carefully with a damp cloth and mild, fragrance-free soap, keep water away from openings and let the item dry completely.
A Simple Five-Step Cleaning Routine
Read the material and water-resistance instructions.
Use the approved method and a mild cleanser.
Remove cleanser residue without flooding openings.
Pat dry, then air-dry completely.
Keep it clean, cool, dry and separated.
How to Clean a Vibrator
For Waterproof Vibrators
If the manufacturer specifically says the vibrator is waterproof or submersible, wash the surface with warm water and mild, fragrance-free soap or an appropriate product from our toy cleaner collection. Rinse as directed and keep the charging area closed when the design requires it. A waterproof rating does not automatically mean every accessory, remote or charger can get wet.
For Splashproof or Non-Waterproof Vibrators
Do not submerge the toy. Turn it off, disconnect it from power and use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild cleanser. Wipe again with a clean damp cloth to remove residue. Pay attention to seams and textured areas without letting moisture enter charging ports, battery compartments or controls.
For Battery-Operated Toys
Remove batteries before longer storage when the manufacturer recommends it. Never clean the battery compartment with running water. Make sure the item is completely dry before reinstalling batteries or charging.
Material and Construction Matter
| Product type | Practical care approach | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Silicone, glass or metal without motors | Use warm water and mild soap unless the maker specifies another method. More intensive sanitizing methods are only appropriate when the exact material and construction are confirmed. | Do not assume an item can be boiled or placed in a dishwasher. |
| Motorized or rechargeable toys | Follow the stated waterproof rating and protect charging points and controls. | Never submerge unless the manufacturer explicitly says it is submersible. |
| Porous or soft-touch materials | Clean gently, dry thoroughly and consider a compatible barrier for shared use. | Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive scrubbing and prolonged damp storage. |
| Leather or specialty gear | Use care products made for that exact material and spot-test when appropriate. | Do not treat specialty materials like washable silicone. |
Skip Harsh Household Disinfectants
Bleach, rubbing alcohol, fragranced cleaners and abrasive products may damage surfaces or leave residue that can irritate sensitive skin. “Antibacterial” is not automatically better. Use the product maker’s directions and a toy-safe cleanser when appropriate.
Drying and Storage
Moisture trapped in seams, textures or closed containers can contribute to odor, residue and material changes. Pat the product dry with a clean lint-free towel, then let it air-dry fully before putting it away. Store items in individual pouches or separate compartments in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Separating toys also reduces contact between materials that may react over time.

Lubricant Compatibility
Water-based lubricant is a versatile starting point for many toys and is generally easier to rinse away. Silicone lubricant may not be compatible with every silicone product, and oil-based lubricant is not compatible with latex barriers. Check the instructions for the toy, lubricant and any condom or barrier rather than relying on one rule for every combination.
Sharing Toys More Thoughtfully
Clean products before and after use. When sharing or moving a toy between body areas, use a new compatible condom or barrier and change it between partners or uses. If a product is damaged, porous or difficult to clean completely, choose a different product for sharing. Personalized health questions belong with a qualified healthcare professional.
When to Stop Using a Product
Pause use when you notice cracks, tears, peeling, sharp edges, exposed wiring, swelling batteries, unusual heat, persistent odor after cleaning or a major texture change. Do not charge a wet product. Replace damaged charging cables with manufacturer-approved parts, and contact the manufacturer when a battery or motor behaves unusually.
Product Care FAQs
Should I clean a vibrator before the first use?
Yes. Follow the product instructions and clean it before first use, after each use and after long storage.
Can I boil a silicone toy?
Only when the manufacturer confirms that the entire product is made from a boil-safe material and contains no motor, battery, charging port, coating or component that heat could damage.
Can I put a sex toy in the dishwasher?
Do not assume dishwasher cleaning is safe. Heat, detergent and moving parts can damage many products. Use the manufacturer’s instructions.
Why does my toy feel sticky?
Residue, heat, humidity, age or material breakdown may cause tackiness. Clean and dry it according to its instructions. If the change remains or the surface is peeling, stop using it and ask the maker or retailer for guidance.
How long should a vibrator air-dry?
Until every surface, seam and opening is completely dry. The time varies with the product design and room conditions.
What if I do not know what material my toy is?
Check the packaging or product page. If you still cannot identify it, use a cautious wipe-clean method, avoid heat and harsh chemicals, and ask us for help before trying a stronger cleaning method.
